Vancouver Lake Sailing
Club Regatta Results
Vancouver Lake Sailing Club put on a great regatta this year. However, we didn’t have much wind until the last hours of the last day. The Tasar teams attending the regatta were mostly from Willamette Sailing Club save the Kaselers traveling from Bainbridge Island. The first day we completed 3 races in light, patchy and shifty wind. At least it was sunny and warm... Vander Schalies and Bittners didn’t seem to mind the light air and finished the day tied for first. VLSC has a member who is a chef at one of the notable downtown Portland hotels and on Saturday night they served up an amazing dinner. Bill Symes summed the general sentiment noting, “I will remember that meal long after I have forgotten the sailing.” Sunday morning began with a biblical rain event accompanied by strong winds. The amount of rain was so significant that you couldn’t see the other side of the lake. Needless to say the committee was not motivated to set a course. Appropriately, the wind and rain were followed by a period of zero wind. A small sucker breeze of a knot or so picked up just long enough for the cats, Lightnings, and Tasars to start a race that would be eventually abandoned. After an hour or two and a beer or two on the beach the forecasted 10-15 knot westerly finally came charging onto the lake. We had just enough time for two payback races on the lightweights to finish up the regatta. The Vander Schalies sailed well with solid finishes in the breeze keeping their overall lead to the end. The Bittners squeezed by the Symes on a tie breaker for second place. Tony Updated to 2006-05-17 |
