| Flights of Spring 2007 Regatta Report. For the first Vancouver Tasar regatta of 2007 we had 9 boats out (including all 4 that will be going to the Worlds in 2007). Saturday’s racing was held in a light and shifty SE wind (4-10 knots), only 3 races were completed before the wind died. Bruce Gage/Indi Finch of Seattle won the first race and Laura Konitzer age 12 (with dad Ronald as crew) won the second race. We encourage more young Tasar sailors! The 3rd race on Saturday was a port tack start and a one tack drag race to the windward mark. Guy and Marie Wall passed Lynn and I downwind to win this race. Perhaps the best thing about Saturday was the dinner at the “Banana Leaf” Malaysian restaurant on Broadway instead of the usual regatta food. Thanks to Brian Key for organizing this. I vote to make the “Banana Leaf” the official Tasar restaurant. Sunday we were greeted by 5-10 knots E winds and had 7 races in puffy conditions. Sailors had some funny looks when the tide was apparently flooding at the committee boat when it was ebbing everywhere else. Notably, 4 different boats won races on Sunday in very tight racing. It seemed we went downwind with most of the fleet overlapped. Clear air and protecting an inside overlap was the important thing here. Carol Macmillan/Eric Mair were fast downwind, as well as David and Emma Toone. David Toone even proved Dacron sails still have some life left in them finishing ahead of mylar boats. Richard Spencer/Derek Stanger figured out the tides and shifts to win race 9 by a nice margin. We found good racing at both ends of the fleet. At the end of Sunday only 3 points separated 1st to 3rd with our boat (Tim/Lynn/Allison Coleman) coming out on top by 1 point after 2 throw-outs. Notably the Wall’s would have won if we had 1 or no throwouts, so it was close. Bruce and Indi had an excellent day as well and finished 3rd in the series. Thanks to everyone that sailed and to the JSCA staff and volunteers on the RC boat (Lori Harkins and Rory Johnston and any others I may have missed). Flights of Spring results. I hope to see everyone out for the first Tuesday night race on May 1st. Tim Murphy Posted 2007-04-23 |
