North
American Tasar Association
President’s Address – April 2003
North American Tasar Sailors:
Wishing you a merry spring! The start of our Tasar sailing season
is under
way. We recently concluded the Spring Frostbite regatta at Corinthian
Yacht
Club in Seattle. It was an excellent event with fourteen (14) boats
attending and racing. Check out www.tasar.org for results and a
write up.
It was encouraging from my perspective, that we had a few people
travel for
the event (Davis’ from Victoria!!), that some new boats were
out and we even
convinced some fair weather sailors to show. (My crew/wife: Sharon)
After a
very cold Saturday, Sharon has new socks, gloves and hat. This
was true for
a number of other boats as well. I kept telling people, “There
is a reason
it is called “Spring Frostbite”!”
I tried to call or e-mail the majority of people who I thought
had a
possibility of showing up. Even if you could not attend, it seemed
that
people appreciated this effort and there was time for us to talk
about
specific issues facing certain teams. I know we all lead busy lives,
and
Tasars are probably not the highest priority for any of our members,
but if
you own a boat, I want to help you use it. With that in mind, let’s
start
thinking about Flights of Spring Regatta at Jericho, April 26,27.
Always a
good time of year to sail at Jericho and I know of three former
world
champions that are planning on attending. Don’t let this
scare you away,
use it as a learning experience or the chance to gloat! With the
home fleet
of Tasars out of the Viking Sailing Club, I’m thinking we
will have close to
twenty boats for this event. Help out your class and come sailing.
Thursday night sailing has started in Seattle and suddenly everything
seems
right in the world. To me there is something magical about that
experience.
Getting out on the water with your friends while the sun sets over the
Olympic Mountains is definitely special. It also marks the dawning of
summer just around the corner.
Early registration for the Worlds in Victoria ends on May 1st,
so visit
www.tasarworlds2003.org and register. This event is going to be
awesome!
I’ve been in touch with the organizers, party planners and
competitors.
Everyone is excited for a wonderful vacation. Yes, I said it, Vacation…adult
camp, whatever you want to call it but we are all going to have
a fun time.
Remember only one team will win the event, think of how you can
make this
successful for your team. For me this will include a few shopping
trips and
a full cooler. What will you do on the Lay-day, Wednesday? Take
the ferry
to Port Angeles and a hike in the Olympic National Park? A kayak
trip out of
Sydney to Princess Marguerite Provincial Park? Butchart Gardens?
Lunch at
Wickinish Inn?
Please get your boat out and support your local Tasar Fleet!
Until next month, wishing you fair winds,
Allan F. Johnson
