North
American Tasar Association
President’s Address – March 2003
NATA Members:
The official start of our Tasar sailing season is less than a
month away!
Remember, we have two events in April: The Spring Frostbite Regatta
at CYC
in Seattle, and The Flights of Spring Regatta at JSC in Vancouver.
Thursday
Night sailing in Seattle will start on April 10. I’m so excited
I can’t
stand it!
It is shaping up to be a great season with lots of activity, enthusiasm,
and
fun from new faces as well as old. We have at least 5 new teams
that you
will see on the water. They include Gary Brandt, Bruce Gage, Leo
Van Dorp,
Angus Henderson and Jeff Browning. Apologies for not recognizing
the crews
of these teams, and it seems I’m missing someone else….If
you are new (or
even a class stalwart) call me and tell me about your Tasar Program.
I’m
trying to get a handle on everyone’s involvement, schedule
and needs for the
year.
A few housekeeping notes: 1) Send in your NATA dues. We are a
small class,
it is not a lot of money, and we need everyone involved. We feel
you get
quite a bit for your dues, including a yearly newsletter, an excellent
website, ISAF International Class Status, Class Membership with
US Sailing,
and stellar racing. 2) With recognition as an International Class
by ISAF,
it is now a requirement of our TASAR Rules that you must carry
the letters
of your country (USA, CAN, GBR, AUS) on your mainsail to be eligible
to
race. Without country letters, you are not sailing a measured Tasar.
This
rule will be enforced at our NATA Regattas and particularly the
Worlds this
year. Take one hour to do this simple task.
Announcing the CANADIAN-AMERICAN SERIES 2003: Count your best
three out of
four regattas from Flights of Spring (CAN-April), SOCKS (USA-May),
Tasar BC
Champs(CAN-Sept) and Seattle Fleet Champs(USA- Oct). Put this down
as one of
your Tasar Goals this year.
We had a wonderful Seattle Fleet Party with about 50 people in
attendance.
The following Sunday there were 5 Tasars out sailing, and one fully
rigged
in the parking lot for the CYC open house. People are getting excited,
we
have some new faces and the temperature is getting warmer.
Pre-season tips for getting your boat ready: Take a dry afternoon
this
March, and go spend time with you boat. Take the cover off, take
everything
out of the boat and rig it completely. Now sponge and clean the
cockpit and
the hull. While it is drying, remove all tape from every part and
go over
all of the moving parts. Replace things as needed and re-tape.
Pay
attention to the vang, rotator, shroud slides, halyards and ring
dings.
De-rig and put boat away. Now you are confident in your clean and
functioning boat, all you have to do is get it to the water.
As always, feel free to contact me with even the simplest of questions,
thoughts or ideas. I hope to be of help to you during my term as
NATA
President. Wishing you fair winds!
